A Letter from President Hardesty

Dear Alumni and Friends of WVU:

As president of West Virginia's flagship university, your alma mater, I am pleased to share with you a few "bragging rights" about today's WVU. Our University is attracting considerable attention thanks to its emphasis on providing a high-quality undergraduate experience. Here are some recent indicators of our success:

  • West Virginia high school graduates choosing WVU are up approximately 12 percent.
  • Freshman enrollment is up approximately 8 percent over last year.
  • Transfers to WVU are at an all-time high of nearly 900.
  • WVU has the highest graduation rate (56 percent) of any West Virginia public institution of higher education-63 percent higher than its closest major competitor.
  • Our Career Success Academy is providing opportunities for students to explore careers by working with alumni mentors.
  • The Mountaineer Parents Club now operates in more than 20 states and, as reported in USA Today, it includes more than 6,000 families.
  • Designs are being implemented for a $225 million campus master plan that includes new library facilities and a new life sciences building, as well as a new student recreation center.
  • Private giving is on the rise, reaching more than $46 million last year.

No wonder Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine just named us one of the Top 100 best higher education values in the country!

We believe that WVU offers one of the most comprehensive student-life programs anywhere in the United States. Our aim is a clear, precise one: Success. Expect it.

However, competition to attract students is increasing, both in West Virginia and nationally. We need to get the word out to students and families about the many success-oriented programs at WVU.

Please help us. Talk to potential WVU students in your area. Show them the West Virginia University Alumni Magazine and any other literature you have that spotlights the quality of WVU.

Feel free to call us at 304-293-2124, ext. 1229, or 1-800-344-WVU1. We'll be glad to talk to you about ways you can help. Thank you!

David C. Hardesty, Jr.
President
