Alumni Leaders Recognized as Distinguished West Virginians
Years of service to their state and their alma mater are the reasons two former WVU Alumni presidents recently received the coveted Distinguished West Virginian Award from the governor's office. Glenn Adrian and Stephen Goodwin were recognized for their commitment to the state's flagship institution over the decades.

Goodwin was the 100th president of the Alumni board. His tenure was marked with increases in Alumni Association membership, and the launching of new programs and initiatives. Under Adrian, the 101st president, the Association organized its advocacy efforts throughout the state and continued to build on strategic programming to benefit WVU.

"I recommended Steve and Glenn to the governor after observing all that they have done for WVU," explained Mike Garrison, who is the governor's chief of staff, and also a member of the Alumni board of directors. "They are both perfect examples of what it means to be a distinguished West Virginian."
"I am extremely surprised and humbled by the award," explained Glenn Adrian. "It really means a lot to me," he continued.

"The University is something my family holds very dear. We have been very committed to the Alumni Association and WVU because it is such an important part of our lives," said Steve Goodwin.

Going through the Motions

By Christy B. Day

Since receiving her master's in physical therapy from WVU in 2001, Sheyi Ojofeitimi has been a woman on the move. She spends her time studying how people move and patching them up when they move the wrong way. As a research associate for the Adam Center at Long Island University, she works extensively with the Alvin Ailey of America Dance Theater. The dance company was founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958 as an avenue for black modern dancers to express their art and their love for dance. Today, AAADT receives international, critical acclaim for its artistry and unique style of modern and classical dance.

Ojofeitimi says she owes much of her success to WVU's physical therapy program. "I don't think I realized how good this program was while I was at WVU. But once I began working I was thankful of how prepared I was for the job," she explained. "I compare my education and abilities with graduates from any university in New York or anywhere, and I am as well or better prepared than most," Ojofeitimi continued.

Ojofeitimi's work with the dance theater can be compared to the excitement of NASCAR's Daytona 500. Dancers often make their way to her in the middle of a performance-much like racecar drivers make pit stops in the middle of the race. "During intermission, dancers often come to me with a sprained ankle, wrist, or whiplash-like injury to the neck. I have to make a quick evaluation and determine if it is safe for them to continue. It is tough because they want to finish the performance and I have to decide if they can be bandaged and allowed to continue, or if they have to be taken out of the piece for more extensive treatment," she said.

She says the job is very rewarding in a lot of ways. "I help dancers get back on their feet. They love to dance, and when they are hurt and can't perform it is tough on them. I am part of their healing process. It's the best feeling in the world to help someone recover from an injury and watch them jump and plié with a smile on their face," she said. Ojofeitimi's job is demanding, and she loves every part of it.
