Giving Prime Time Help
By Jim Bissett

Does this alumnus look familiar? You may have seen her on TV before. Kim Webster, a 1994 WVU theater graduate, plays the recurring role of Ginger on NBC's Emmy-winning political drama, The West Wing.

When Webster isn't acting in plays or putting in 14-hour days on the set of the series starring Martin Sheen, she volunteers her time working for AIDS awareness. She is a national spokeswoman for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and travels the country speaking out for awareness of the disease.

Webster has two very special reasons for volunteering her time. She was in her freshman year at WVU when her parents decided to adopt two HIV-positive infants, Ricky and Jessica, who had been abandoned.

When speaking of her parent's decision to adopt the sick children, she said "They're very brave. They're absolute angels. I just didn't see it. Not at first. I reacted pretty badly. I'm pretty ashamed and embarrassed when I think back."

Now she says it's her mission to try to save her brother's life.

Jessica was spared. While born HIV-positive, she began testing negative at 18 months. Infants are born carrying their mother's body fluids, which are eventually replaced by their own. Sometimes that's enough to knock the HIV. That's what happened with Jessica, who is now 16.

Ricky wasn't as lucky, but regular visits to his doctors have Ricky on an even keel for now. Doctors had initially predicted the 15-year-old wouldn't live past his seventh birthday.

"We've had him for twice as long as we were supposed to," Webster said. "Every day is a blessing."
Webster appreciates the turns her life has taken.

Terry Dixon-Playing It Smart
Terry Dixon grew up in a violent and poverty-ridden area of Washington, D.C. Many of his friends and acquaintances are now dead.

Terry was lucky. He had a father that he followed everywhere. And, he had sports.

After graduating from high school, he enrolled at WVU where he was a lineman for the Mountaineer football team, playing on the Music City Bowl's championship team.

Armed with his college degree and love of the game, he returned to the D.C. area to try to help other kids in the similar situations. He teamed up with his former coach at Anacostia High to coach football. It was there that he was introduced to the National Football Foundation's Play It Smart Program—an educational program targeted at kids from tough inner city environments where family and community support are generally lacking.

As an academic coach, Terry serves as a counselor, providing the kids with extra attention to their off-the-field development, while helping them grow as players. He works with them, makes sure they go to class, checks their progress, and helps them get tutoring—whatever it takes.

For Dixon, it's an opportunity to help try to keep kids off the streets and out of harm's way through sports and school. His goal: To make them so tired that they won't want to go out onto the streets.

At less than a-dollar-a-day per student-athlete, the program has sent 87 percent of its participants to college.
