Available on Thursday
By Laura Spitznogle

Who says graduate work has to be boring? Not Chris Barr. Barr, who graduated from WVU in 2002 with a bachelor of fine arts degree, had over 18,000 visits to his Web site (www.availableonthursday.com) during the months of March and April, asking him to complete all sorts of odd requests.
Barr, who is a media studies graduate student at the State University of New York at Buffalo, said his project, “Chris Barr is Available on Thursday,” was a collaborate live art and documentary project. On his Web site, Barr invited people to send in requests—everything from writing a letter to a girlfriend to shuttling a professor to a doctor’s appointment. Barr picked some reasonable requests, followed instructions (only on Thursdays, of course), and recorded the results on his Web site. And, yes, he earned an A for the course.
His project garnered attention in national media (including the Chronicle of Higher Education and New York Times). Seen here, Barr (at the request of the WVU Alumni Magazine staff) poses in front of the Center for Fine Arts at the State University of New York at Buffalo in his finest WVU attire. |

Son Teams With Mother to Provide One-Stop Service
Noah Farberow understands the importance of continuity in any relationship. He and his mother, Ronna Del Valle, a certified financial planner, are working together to provide an array of financial services to meet the needs of their clients through their independent financial planning firm, Golden Strategies Financial Group.
Their “generational continuity” approach to financial planning was recently featured on CNN and in Money magazine. The innovative concept of gen-erational continuity focuses on not only the needs of the clients, but also how clients can provide for their children as well as their aging parents. Generational continuity is geared toward thousands of baby boomers who find themselves caring for their parents and their children at the same time. The approach connects the ideas of living for today, planning for tomorrow, and thinking about family security.
Farberow, who received his bachelor’s degree from WVU in 1998, is senior vice president of the company. He and his mother work with a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, accountants, insurance professionals, and others to provide a one-stop shop for clients.
“By providing the whole package of services, we can meet the needs of our clients, while making them feel at ease, particularly in difficult situations,” says Farberow. |
