Cash for Credit

James Blair first entered a newsroom as
an advertising manager for a small newspaper in Clinton, North
Carolina, in the early 1970s—a time when computers were
as fresh as his entrepreneurial spirit. Nearly 30 years later,
Blair has become a leader in the credit reporting industry and
an innovator in the computerized tracking of credit histories.
"All the products that we have basically didn't exist five
years ago," Blair says.
A 1969 WVU journalism graduate, Blair returned to campus last
fall to train people from area news media in the selling skills
and entrepreneurial drive that helped him succeed. Blair calls
his program "an intense boot camp," where sales professionals
learn basic and advanced selling techniques.
Blair, who grew up near Lonaconing, Maryland, entered the service
in 1970 and was assigned to the JFK Center for Military Assistance,
a special operations division like those the U.S. sent to Afghanistan.
Blair worked on campaigns to help beef up the American military
image as the U.S. government removed troops from Vietnam. He
left the military in April 1973 and went to his first newspaper
job in North Carolina.
Blair returned to West Virginia two years later to work at the
Republican Delta in Buckhannon. He left West Virginia
again in 1977 to work in West Lafayette, Indiana, running the
Purdue University Exponent.
In 1979 Blair became the publisher of the Daily Independent
in Kannapolis, North Carolina. As a member of the Kannapolis
Chamber of Commerce, Blair worked with a group whose aim was
to turn around an ailing credit bureau by computerizing it. Within
a year, the company went from being unable to meet its payroll
to making $168,000. Blair was hooked.
In 1982, Blair and his wife, Marsha, purchased their first credit
bureau from CBI, now Equifax, the largest credit reporting entity
in the world. In 1983 the couple purchased a second credit bureau
in Johnson City, Tennessee, and in 1986 they purchased another
in Greenville, North Carolina. Blair quit the newspaper industry
and went full-time into the credit reporting industry.
He got into the industry just as it was becoming automated, moving
records from cards in cabinets to computers. "This was in
the early stages of creating databases on a national basis. You
were able to put hundreds of thousands of records on the computer.
Then CBI linked the files together so they had files on 300 million
people, more adults than there are in the entire U.S.,"
he says.
Three major national companies dominate the credit reporting
business: Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian. In 1997, Blair
sold his credit bureaus to Equifax. As part of the sale, he carved
out several niche markets that he thought the national credit
bureaus did not do a good job of servicing. Those markets are
now being served under the umbrella of Blair's Online Information
Services.
Modest about his rise in the credit reporting industry, he says
he would never have made it without a little luck and his ability
to sell his products and to think outside the box. "I think
that I was just afforded a lot of opportunity," he says.
"I've always been very entrepreneurial. When I look at something,
I don't see it the same way as other people."
Soaring High in the Air Force

A WVU alumnus is among those leading the
U.S. military efforts in the war on terrorism. Robert H. "Doc"
Foglesong, who earned three degrees from WVU, was promoted to
the rank of general during a November 5 Pentagon ceremony, and
has assumed duties as the Air Force vice chief of staff.
Foglesong earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in
chemical engineering from WVU in 1968, 1969, and 1971, respectively.
He is a member of the WVU Academy of Distinguished Alumni and
the WVU Chemical Engineering Academy. He returned to Morgantown
in December to address graduates at WVU's Fall 2001 convocation
ceremonies.
The general's aviation career includes more than 3,800 flying
hours, primarily in fighter and training assignments. He has
been a commander five times.
Foglesong's staff tours include duty as chair and professor of
joint and combined warfare, National War College; assistant to
the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington D.C.;
commander, U.S. Southern Command Air Forces; and deputy chief
of staff for air and space operations at Headquarters U.S. Air
Force.
He has received numerous awards and decorations, including the
Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal,
and Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. The general
has published 37 articles on leadership, military, and scientific
subjects, and received an honorary doctorate in strategic intelligence
from the Joint Military Intelligence College.
Covering the War on Terrorism

Asra Nomani, a 1986 WVU graduate in journalism
who is a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, has
been covering the war against terrorism from Pakistan as a special
correspondent for Salon.com.
Nomani is a Muslim born in India, whose father, WVU Professor
M. Zafar Nomani, helped start Morgantown's only mosque. At age
18, she visited family in Pakistan to learn more about her religion
and culture, and later returned for marriage.
"As an Indian-born Muslim, a woman traveling alone in Pakistan,
a Westerner covering the war against the West, Nomani is well
situated to describe the fault lines of the post-September 11
world from many angles," wrote the editors of Salon.com, introducing her to the on-line
magazine's readers.
Nomani shared this thought about the assignment in Pakistan:
"I'll try to report not only what is happening on the ground
in a country that warily, but dutifully, is supporting its ally,
the United States, but also try to figure out this emerging conflict
between cultures, East vs. West, Muslim vs. the world, it seems,
that has become a subtext of this entire battle."
Nomani is posting dispatches from Pakistan while on leave to
write a book about the ancient art of Tantra. The book is scheduled
to be published this year by HarperCollins.
Alumni Help a Flooded Friend

Charlie Stump said it was a prescription
in humanity, and it was filled by his alma mater and Mylan Laboratories.
When floodwaters ravaged Stump's drugstore in Mullens twice last
summer, destroying its inventory and computer system, fellow
alumni of the WVU School of Pharmacy came to the rescue. Associate
Dean of Pharmacy Carl Malanga heard about Stump's distress, and
he knew that the 10,000 customers served by Charlie's Pharmacy—many
of them elderly, retired coal miners—needed the medications
lost in the flood.
Malanga called around until he reached Roger Renner, a 1976 pharmacy
graduate who directs the employee pharmacy at Mylan Laboratories
in Morgantown. Within a week of the second flood, every non-controlled
drug item in Stump's store was replaced—free of charge—courtesy
of Mylan President Milan Puskar.
"I can't thank the University and Mylan Labs enough,"
said Stump, a 1966 pharmacy graduate. "I always kept my
connections with WVU, and those connections are what's keeping
this store going."
