Studying Southern West Virginia Bears
Photographs by Dan Friend

WVU alumni working for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) are gathering data on the reproductive activity of the black bear population in southern West Virginia. Encounters with "nuisance" bears are a growing problem in the lower part of the state, where females produce more cubs per litter than do females living in the traditional bear strongholds of the Monongahela National Forest. More than 1,000 complaints were received by DNR when nuisance bears destroyed the 2001 blackberry crop.

Law Graduate Helps Fight the War on Terrorism
By Bill Nevin and Laura Tuckwiller

As a law student at WVU in the late 1980s, Anne Asbury never envisioned she would someday be on the front lines of one of the biggest battles America has ever fought: the war on terrorism.

Now an agent with the FBI in Washington, D.C., Asbury finds herself involved in perhaps the most intense and far-reaching investigation ever undertaken by the U.S. Department of Justice. Her assignment: counter-terrorism, and the investigation of John Walker Lindh, the California native accused of conspiring to kill Americans as a member of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.

Despite her high-profile mission, the Huntington native has not forgotten where she came from. Asbury, 37, earned a degree in political science and criminal justice in 1986 from Marshall University. She enrolled that fall at the WVU College of Law.

"Early on, I realized that being a lawyer in the private sector was not the career I was looking for. Law enforcement had always been in the back of my mind," Asbury said.

Just before beginning her final year of law school, Asbury joined the Navy in hopes of becoming a member of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. After graduation in 1989, she attended officer training school before returning to West Virginia to take the bar exam. While temporarily assigned to the Naval Legal Service Office in Norfolk, Virginia, she learned she had failed the exam.

After stints working at a surf shop and doing research for a Norfolk law firm, she applied for a job with the FBI. Her first assignment was in Philadelphia working white collar crimes, drug arrests, and bank robberies. In April 1997, Asbury was temporarily assigned to Washington, D.C., to investigate campaign financing activities during previous presidential elections. Later that year, she was transferred to the FBI's Washington Field Office and assigned to the National Security Division, counter-terrorism branch.

Much of her work involved events surrounding the 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassy in East Africa. Then came September 11, 2001.

"I was actually driving by the Pentagon when the plane hit," Asbury said. "I assisted in traffic control and listened as the local police announced over a loudspeaker to motorists that another plane was headed for Washington. To say the least, it was very surreal."

When Asbury finally reached her office that day, a command post had already been set up and people were in action. Her role in counter-terrorism had taken on a new, much more significant meaning.
Since 9-11, Asbury's duties have taken her to Afghanistan as one of the lead investigators in the case against John Walker Lindh. An affidavit she wrote was filed in federal court to obtain an arrest warrant against Lindh.

The U.S. military took the 20-year-old into custody last December after a bloody prison uprising in northern Afghanistan. Among the charges against him: providing material support or resources to terrorist organizations, including al-Qaida; engaging in a conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals abroad; and engaging in transactions with the Taliban. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment.

While she can't discuss specifics of the case, Asbury says "being a part of this investigation has been emotional, educational, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Like so many others, Asbury says her life will forever be changed by the events of 9-11. "I don't think anyone in law enforcement, especially in counter-terrorism, will ever look at their job in the same way," she said.

And while that job often takes her to far-off lands where it's commonplace to be put in harm's way, Asbury's memories of West Virginia and her days at WVU are fond.

"I am very proud to say that I'm from West Virginia and was educated there. I can't say enough about the WVU law school. Even though I wasn't the greatest student, I feel I received an excellent education. Many of my classmates have gone on to very successful careers as attorneys."

Asbury likes what's she's doing, and has no immediate plans to try and pass that bar exam again. But every once in awhile, she admits, "I think about that job at the surf shop."

Capital Crab Feast Marks 25 Years of Fun
By Christy Day

Twenty-five years of tradition and loyalty are behind the many Mountaineers who travel in crusade fashion to Washington, D.C., each summer for the annual National Capital Area Chapter Crab Feast. Their motivation has nothing to do with political agendas, business deals, or other professional intentions. Instead, they come ready to gather around the picnic table and crack crab shells until their arms are tired, while talking fondly about WVU and the Mountain State.

"When we created this event, we wanted something that would stand on its own," explained Paul Farmer '56, NCAC board member.

To that end, the board was extremely successful. During the history of the crab feast, the Alumni Association chapter has raised $200,000 for WVU. With the silver anniversary approaching in August, Farmer describes the crab feast as a labor of love. "We used to cook the crabs ourselves on-site. Let me tell you, that was backbreaking work. I would hardly be able to move the next day," he said.

These days, the chapter has the blue crabs catered. But as for the corn, hot dogs, hamburgers, shrimp, and other barbecue favorites, chapter volunteers do the cooking. "We have been planning this event for months," Farmer said. "Many people don't see the behind-the-scenes work: they just show up and have a great time. And that is the way it is supposed to be."

Because of his tireless work in organizing the feast, Farmer is affectionately known as the Head Crab. The event now draws guests from all across the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states, and even brings in alumni from other colleges and universities in West Virginia. "We've had groups from Fairmont State and the University of Charleston attend. Our own WVU Tech is also very loyal," Farmer said.

Although the food is the centerpiece of the day, most people travel the distance to share in the camaraderie. The Crab Feast has become a rite of summer for many families. They attend each year to see their Mountaineer friends and talk about old times. "Because people take a break from crushing crabs to socialize, and then get more to eat later in the day, this has become an all-day, family-oriented event," Farmer said. "In other words, they come early and they stay late."

The 2002 Crab Feast is on Saturday, August 3, at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. It begins at 2 p.m. and winds down at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $30 in advance, call (703) 425-5426, or $35 at the gate.

Moving in Stereo
By Laura Spitznogle

Sounds like the future is coming in stereo for George Cicci. He's half of the team that's making it possible for you to play video with high-quality stereo sound on your Palm Pilot.

Cicci, who received a B.S. in journalism from WVU in 1997, says his inspiration to become a creative person—and a businessman—came early in life from his grandmother and the movie Star Wars. His grandmother started her own dance supply business in the 1940s and it quickly became a family concern. When she passed away, he says, "I felt I had to take the skills she'd given me to start something or I would be wasting her knowledge."

Cicci combined that knowledge with his love for electronic music. "Sound has always been a big thing with me. I can remember watching The Making of Star Wars . . . I could not get the sound effects for Star Wars out of my mind."

Cicci's first creation was the chorus of "We Three Kings" on Merlin, an early platform for computer-generated music. He went from there to a high school band, then to making sound for web pages.

"I had friends who moved to New York, San Francisco, and D.C. for the dot-com rush. They were in web design." He says he began freelancing for those friends when they needed "kickin'" sounds for their web pages.

When the dot-com rush began to falter, so did Cicci's business, Singularity Studios. So, he shifted his work from web pages to other outlets such as the Palm Pilot, his biggest project so far. Cicci collaborated with an independent video producer in New York to merge video and sound for the Palm Pilot.

Other jobs are coming in. So fast, in fact, that Cicci plans to hire a couple of employees and has already contracted out several jobs. He also works with another WVU graduate, Chris Coleman B.F.A. '01, on video art pieces. They entered some of their work in Ponte De Futura, an Italian video art festival, last year. They also entered an artistic piece in a Toronto video festival.

Seven's the Lucky Number for Dominion and WVU
By Melissa Soave

What are the odds that seven out of 15 vice presidents of one of the nation's leading electric power and natural gas companies are West Virginia University graduates? Well, trust us, it's not a common occurrence. Not because WVU grads aren't executive material, but because of the sheer numbers involved in the equation: 15,000 employees, 15 vice presidents, seven Mountaineers.

But such is the case at Dominion, a $24 billion electric power and natural gas company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Dominion has nearly four million retail customers in five states through its 13 subsidiaries. Seven of its top-level executives are alumni of the WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources or the WVU College of Business and Economics. And these alumni are proud to be Mountaineers, admitting that they engage in some good-natured ribbing of their University of Virginia, Naval Academy, and Virginia Tech colleagues whenever possible.

These seven corporate leaders have parlayed their Mountaineer pride into the establishment of the Dominion Executive Endowed Scholarships, which will provide tuition and fees to undergraduates enrolled in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources or those enrolled as pre-majors or majors in the College of Business and Economics. To establish the scholarship, the "Dominion Seven" together pledged $25,000, but because they work for a matching-gift company, the total gift is $50,000, enough to perpetuate sizable scholarships each year beginning in 2006.

"This is a great opportunity to show our pride as alumni and help students with academic potential and financial needs," said one of Dominion's WVU-educated executives, Leslie Hartz.

Hiner, Arnold Honored in Washington

The West Virginia Society of Washington, D.C., has selected two WVU graduates as Son and Daughter of the Year.

Glen H. Hiner '57 and Phyllis Huff Arnold '70 were honored by members of the society and the West Virginia Congressional delegation at ceremonies in Washington on March 6.

Hiner is chairman and CEO of Owens Corning, based in Toledo, Ohio, a world leader in the production of fiberglass products for home insulation and industrial applications. He joined Owens Corning after a 35-year career with General Electric. A native of Morgantown, Hiner earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from WVU. In 1990, he received an honorary doctorate from WVU. He travels to West Virginia often, and is an active WVU supporter.

Arnold is the West Virginia central regional president of BB&T, with her headquarters in Charleston. BB&T is a North Carolina-based company with banking activities in seven states and the District of Columbia. Arnold was born in Parkersburg and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from WVU. She holds an MBA from Marshall University and completed the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. She, too, is an active WVU supporter.
