Grad Finds Success Toying Around
What can a boomerang, an old van, and a dash of innovative thinking
get you? How about a toy company that brings in $3 million in
annual sales. When Dean Helfer attended WVU in the early 1980s
he was known as the guy who sold boomerangs out of the back of
a van that he bought for $200 (engine not included). "Other
folks were selling tie-dyed T-shirts, I wanted to sell something
different," explained Helfer. His service-after-the-sale
attitude meant that he not only sold the toys but also showed
customers how to use them correctly.
It wasn't too long before boomerangs were the rave throughout
campus with students flinging them in grassy areas from Woodburn
Circle to the Evansdale campus. In fact, Helfer garnered enough
interest to start a boomerang club that performed at halftime
during a football game. Upon graduating in 1985 with a degree
in marketing from the College of Business and Economics, he was
ready to put his college success to the test.
Now, nearly 20 years later, Helfer's company, Channel Craft &
Distributors, provides high-end and educational toys nationally
and internationally. You can find his goods in museum gift shops
and a variety of small retail gift shops. "Our favorite
clients are the mom and pop retail outfits," Helfer explained.
"They know best how to sell our unique toys to their customers."
Proud of the "American made" label displayed on his
company's web site, Heflin says Channel Craft toys are 100 percent
home grown. "We don't make every component of our toys in
our shop. We keep a number of companies in business supplying
us with parts. But we make sure that every component of a Channel
Craft toy is made in the U.S.A."
Helfer's company has received awards from Oppenheim Toy Portfolio
and Games 100, and has received the coveted National Parenting
Award, proving that Channel Craft & Distributors is more
than just fun and games.

Building a Solid Foundation
Damien Walters has done what many have dreamed but not dared
to do. He turned a casual summer job into a multimillion-dollar
business. Walters, who earned a B.A. in history from WVU in 1997,
is president of Allview Builders, a remodeling company based
in Frederick, Maryland, whose growth is steeped in customer satisfaction
and a commitment to hard work.
To get a real understanding
of Walters' story you have to travel back to Morgantown in the
early 1990s. As a teenager, he learned to paint houses by accident.
"A friend moved to Texas and asked if I would help him out
by doing some painting for him down there," Walters explained.
He painted the house inside and out. So, when trying to find
a way to make money at WVU one summer to help pay for his education,
Walters knew what to do. "I got some friends together and
we advertised that we would do house repairs." He and his
team were hired by a rental agency and the odyssey began. In
a few months he had netted $30,000. Not too bad for a summer
job. "I was able to do what I had set out to do," Walters
explained. "I didn't have to work during the school year
because of the money I earned in the summer."
That was only ten years ago. Now the WVU alumnus heads a corporation
that is a direct offshoot of his early entrepreneurial days in
West Virginia. Allview Builders is a design/build company. That
means Walters' team of architects, engineers, and craftsmen consult
closely with home owners to make sure the work suits their lifestyles,
tastes, and needs. With projects ranging from $5,000 to $450,000,
Walters has learned that his company can meet needs big and small.
When he enrolled at WVU, Walters had a much different career
path planned. He wanted to apply to law school after receiving
his bachelor's degree. What happened? After graduation, he went
to work in corporate America working in a top marketing firm.
"But it was too restrictive," Walters explained. He
believes that the research skills learned at WVU planted the
seeds for his success. His comprehensive research, book sense,
and business sense prepared him well.

Living
Reality TV
Norris Preston Rakin (B.S. '94) has an uncanny way of making
things happen.
While in college, he worked at the campus radio station, U92,
as the director of the Urban Diner show.
These days Rakin is in the middle of a hot television trendreality
TV. He has worked extensively on a number of popular shows such
as Big Brother 3, The Family, and Music Behind Bars. Currently,
he works on the show Ripley's Believe it or Not. It's
his job to edit these television shows into seamless perfection,
delivering a final product that has left America wanting more
reality TV.
After graduation, Rakin worked at an herbal supplement company
for a while. "I was in a key position and learned a lot
about the business world. The work was grueling and I felt that
I needed a break," Rakin explained. Enjoying life and living
off of his savings, he soon realized it was time to get back
to work, but what did he want to do? "I had some communications
classes at WVU and was interested in the entertainment industry,"
he continued.
He decided to take a six-month course in television production
and editing. Most of his on-the-job training was at Oprah Winfrey's
Oxygen network where he learned about postproduction, leading
him to other positions where he could get hands-on editing experience.
His work is hard, but very gratifying. He was a part of the editing
team behind the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Small Town
Ecstasy. He also worked on the Showtime documentary, The
Family Business.
Rakin's ambition is to see his own work in production. He has
ideas for shows that he would like to see on prime time television.
"That's a dream of mine and I will go about achieving it
like I have everything else. Hard work and perseverance seem
to work for me," he said.
