Alumn's Quarter Design Chosen

No two sides to it—Morgantown sculptor Jamie Lester's depiction of the New River Gorge Bridge has been chosen to grace West Virginia's commemorative quarter.
"It's overwhelming," Lester said.

Lester, who earned a bachelor's degree in fine arts from WVU in 1997, said, "I'm just very honored and humbled and happy that so many West Virginians chose the design."

West Virginia residents cast more than 79,000 ballots, by e-mail, fax, regular mail, and in person, to decide between the bridge design and the runner-up—a quilt-clad outline of the state.

Lester's bridge design won 79 percent of the votes.

Built in 1977, the Gorge bridge is the world's second-longest steel-arch span, at 3,030 feet, and the nation's second-highest at 876 feet.

The U.S. Mint plans to begin distributing West Virginia's quarter at the end of 2005.

A Busy Retirement

Not many 90-year-olds are living independently, much less delivering lectures and teaching seat weaving. Dr. Carl B. Taylor, an associate alumnus of the WVU Division of Family and Consumer Sciences, is still highly active at 90 years old.

In 2003 Taylor was honored as "Special Friend" of the division in recognition of his exemplary instruction that has continued on in retirement, enhancing the elevated quality of instruction already demonstrated by division faculty. He was also commended for boosting the improvement of family life of West Virginians through his teachings in retirement.

Taylor has taught more than 21 courses in the Appalachian Lifelong Learners Program at WVU and 31 courses in seat weaving at the Monongalia Technical Education Center.

The 13 class enrollment books, which Taylor still has, contain the names of 6,245 students. He can remember about 4,000 of those students.

This nonagenarian is also recognized for leading the 1960's fledgling WVU Employee's Federal Credit Union and making it into the vital, effective credit union it is today.

"I call retirement," Taylor says, "my fifth career."

He has been a university professor, a school teacher, a historian, a farmer and back-to-the-lander, cooperative organizer, a rural sociologist, and an author.

When told he was a nice guy, Taylor replied, "No, I'm just service oriented. I am interested in the welfare of human beings first. I'm perfectly willing to spend my extra time in voluntary activities if they benefit people."

Never too Old to Learn

William Caldwell is no spring chicken, so it may have surprised some folks in his hometown of Ravenswood when he told his friends he was going to college. While his buddies were fishing, he was taking classes in environmental science and marketing and learning how to use the Internet.

This past December, Caldwell, 85 years young, received a diploma from WVU at Parkersburg. It was a proud moment for Caldwell, who remembered the exact moment he decided to pursue a college education.

"After my wife died, I was home by myself, pretty alone. I knew I had to do something, and I saw an ad in the local paper from WVU's Parkersburg branch in Jackson County and it said, 'Available: Regent Bachelor of Arts.' I knew I had a lifetime of experiences so I went over to see an advisor and signed up," he said.

WVU's RBA program provides a general education without the requirement of a major. Students submit a written portfolio documenting knowledge of specific disciplines through work or life experiences and receive credit hours based on this information. Often, additional coursework is necessary to obtain the credit hours needed to earn the degree.

"It took me one year to write the portfolio," Caldwell said. "It's my life story, everything from high school on—all of my Navy experience, my 35 years as a hardware merchant—in seven notebooks.

"It took me four years to complete a degree, but I was in no hurry and I just took my time," he said.
As for his future plans, he added, "I've gotten pretty good on the computer and now I'm thinking about going for my master's degree."
