The Charleston native, a 1983 WVU graduate with a B.S. in geology, says helping WVU attract good students is more fun than work. "I love WVU," he says. "I really enjoy doing this." Jacobs volunteers to visit local high schools, attends about two dozen college fairs per year, and contacts about 20 students by telephone each year to offer personal assistance. He has built such strong relationships with high school guidance counselors in the Richmond area that WVU no longer must send a professional recruiter to the area. "Students are really impressed when they hear some of the facts about WVU," Jacobs says. "They're amazed at how large it is, by the number of Rhodes Scholars it has produced, and many other things." Jacobs says he enjoys explaining the uniqueness of the educational experience his alma mater offers to potential students. He has very fond memories from his student days and from visits to Morgantown over the years since his graduation, something he believes many other WVU graduates share. "Our alumni are very loyal," he says. Jacobs is happy to speak with other WVU alumni about how they can become involved in student recruitment.
